Reading at Home

At Northleigh, after questioning the children about their reading preferences, we have changed our expectations for home reading.

KS1 children are still using Accelerated Reader to ensure that they are reading books that are phonetically matched to them personally and to give them some more structure to their reading.

In KS2, children said that they found Accelerated Reader too limiting so they are now allocated books from our wider range of library books (labelled LKS2, UKS2 and Challenging Read). It is the expectation that an adult will check the book is the right level for the child, all books will be recorded in a class file and in the child's individual reading diary and the diaries will be signed by an adult in school once a week.

Once a half term, teachers will complete running records to check that the books the children are selecting are exactly the right level of challenge.
